ALL OF APOLONIA

From two-time Paralympic gold medalist Patty Cisneros Prevo and award-winning illustrator Mirelle Ortega comes a slam-dunk bilingual picture book about a wheelchair basketball player and her search for belonging. Learn more here. Publication date 3/24/26.

All of Apolonia

It's Apolonia's birthday, and she can't wait to celebrate with her teammates and her cousins. Mamá's rented extra wheelchairs so her primas can join her for a game of wheelchair basketball, and Papá's making arracheras and tres leches cake for all of her guests. But as the party approaches, Apolonia starts to worry that her two worlds are on a collision course. Her teammates want pizza and ice cream, and her cousins think wheelchair basketball sounds weird. Apolonia wonders if this birthday party is a mistake, but with a little help from Mamá, she realizes that her community wants to celebrate her--every part of her. In this beautiful bilingual story, Cisneros Prevo and Ortega explore the fears many kids have about fitting in and recognize the joy of being celebrated for exactly who they are.

Gesy S. Duran, Inventor "Wheel-Eating"

My current project is called Wheel-Eating. It’s a portable folding tray for those in wheelchairs like me, and it allows you to eat anywhere. As someone who spends many hours in a wheelchair but loves coming together with family, friends, and my community to enjoy food, being able to actually eat anywhere is harder than you may think!

An Open Doors Organization study estimated in 2003 that diners with disabilities would spend $35 billion in restaurants that year. The study also found that more than 75% of people with disabilities eat out at a restaurant at least once a week, much lower than those without disability.

As one of the 3 million people with disabilities in New York City, I live this life every single day where I struggle at restaurants. I’m the best person to solve this problem because I understand the true benefits of a product like Wheel-Eating. Learn more here.
